Kakadu And Arnhem Land Wet Season 4WD Tours Details
DAY 1 (L, D)
08:00 Depart Darwin for a 2 day tour of
Kakadu National Park and Arnhem Land. Travel via Fogg Dam and the
Adelaide River Wetlands, the wetland and floodplains of the region
are home to many species of birds, mammals and reptiles.
Continue on along the Arnhem Highway past
giant termite mounds before a comfort stop at the historical Bark
Hut Inn. Next we will journey into the world heritage listed Kakadu
National Park – Kakadu is one of the few places in the world listed
for both its cultural and natural values. After crossing the South
Alligator River, a huge tidal river system we will stop at the
Bowali Visitor and Information Centre. Bowali provides visitors with
a wealth of information and displays on the Park and its habitats.
Depart Bowali and enjoy a picnic lunch before
exploring Nourlangie Rock.
Nourlangie is an ancient Aboriginal rock art
and occupation site. Aboriginal people have inhabited this area for
thousands of years, sheltering under Nourlangie Rock and utilising
the natural resources around them. The results of this occupation
can still clearly be seen and understood today with the various rock
paintings of animals, people and spirits. Your guide will give
detailed explanations of the stories behind the rock art and the
surrounding area.
A short drive from Nourlangie takes us to the
Nawalandja Lookout. From here you get a spectacular view throughout
Kakadu and over into the Arnhem Land escarpment country.
Enjoy the changing colours on Nourlangie and
the escarpment in the background with the possibility of
experiencing one of nature’s greatest light shows known by the
locals as ‘Lightning Dreaming’ before making our way into Jabiru.
Tonight’s accommodation is at the Lakeview Bush Bungalows.
Overnight: Lakeview Bush Bungalows, Jabiru.
DAY 2 (B, L)
This morning after breakfast we will depart
Jabiru for a truly memorable and unique day. From the Jabiru airport
we join a spectacular scenic flight across the Arnhem Land
escarpment and East Alligator region into Arnhem Land and the
Aboriginal community of Gunbalanya.
Upon arrival at Gunbalanya we will be met by
a local Aboriginal guide who will welcome us before giving us a
special tour throughout the community and its surrounds.
Gunbalanya is steeped in history from ancient
Aboriginal culture, dreaming and rock art to the more recent history
of buffalo shooters and early missionaries.
This morning we will visit one of the
community’s important rock art sites where you will learn the story
of ‘Dog Dreaming’. Relax as your guide shares and interprets the
stories of his ancestors and helps you to understand the meaning
behind this ancient tradition.
Next we will visit the renowned Injalak Arts
and Craft Centre where you will have the opportunity to meet with
traditional artists from the community. Artists produce paintings on
both bark and paper in a style renowned to western Arnhem Land.
Weavings of the highest quality are also produced along with
didgeridoos and carvings which you have the opportunity to purchase.
After lunch we will say goodbye to our hosts
and reboard a plane for the scenic flight back to Jabiru. From
Jabiru we will begin making our way back towards Darwin along the
Arnhem Highway making various stops along the way, including a visit
to the Mamukala Wetlands.
Return to Darwin approximately 18:30pm
