Darwin Kakadu Katherine Devils Marbles Alice Springs Tour 2017 with Mataranka Hot Springs Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Darwin travelling via Humpty Doo and enter Kakadu National Park world heritage area. Visit Window on the Wetlands tranquil viewing area  that supports abundant wetlands bird life. Travel on to Ubirr Rock and walk amongst stunning ancient rock art and climb the rock for wetlands view. Visit the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Bowali Visitor Centre. View rock art as we take a walk at stunning Nourlangie Rock. Enjoy the resort facilities at Cooinda Lodge before a spectacular sunset walk at Yellow Waters viewing the birdlife settling in for the night. Overnight at Cooinda.

Day 2 – Board the early boat on the Yellow Waters to cruise amongst extraordinary birdlife and crocodiles in this World Heritage listed wetlands.  Travel on to Pine Creek and then to Katherine for an afternoon Katherine Gorge 2 hour cruise.  Then to Mattaranka (“We of the Never Never” fame) for overnight

Day 3 – Heading south on the Stuart Highway we cross the Ashburton and Whittington Ranges as we travel via famous outback towns of Barrow Creek, Lake Woods & Newcastle Waters.   We travel via Three Ways where the road from Mt Isa and Townsville join the Stuart Highway. Here we see the John Flynn memorial (father of  the Royal Flying Doctor Service). Overnight Tennant Creek.

Day 4 – Connect with the gold mining history of Tennant Creek, and the amazing Devils Marbles boulder formations. Aboriginal legend refers to stones like these as the “Eggs of the Rainbow Serpent”. The journey includes Wycliffe Wells (UFO Centre of Australia), Barrow Creek old Overland telegraph station, and Mt Stirling and Ti-tree are significant landmarks plus visiting the Aileron Outback Art Gallery where we can often see artists at work.

Tour includes small group modern 4 wheel drive vehicles, camping gear, fees, side trips, all meals. Percentage of cost supports Aboriginal community and nature re-creation projects.

The 8 day tour and 5 day tours travel some similar areas – except the 8 day includes 1st night in Alice Springs (or Uluru) hotel, 1 overnight at Palm Valley, 1 extra night (2 total) at Glen Helen allowing more time to explore the MacDonnell Ranges and to visit Redbank Gorge, Mt Sonder and visit Hassts Bluff and Papunya Aboriginal Art Centre.
